For Immediate Release
February 10, 2009 The Loft Artist Association presents a new exhibit Black & White Drawings by Stamford's Loft Artists! AND Two Saturday Events in conjunction with "DRAW ON!" -- a week-long event sponsored by The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Hersam-Acorn Newspapers, Weston Woods Studios. Saturday, March 28, 2-5pm Stamford, CT - In a stark reflection of the current trend towards paring down and trimming what is not essential, the LAA presents LAA Draws!, a show of black and white drawings. In this show, artists have stripped their work of all but a mark making utensil and a surface upon which to render their image. No color intrudes on this tribute to the communicative power of marks on a surface. Each work in this show directly records the process of an artist confronting a blank surface. In painting, printmaking, sculpture and photography, the work goes through many stages that may be completely undetectable in the final piece. Drawing is an accumulation of marks, all of which remain (sometimes as a shadow line which has been erased) when the work is done. One can see how the work was made even as one looks at the end result. This makes for a unique glimpse into the thoughts and process of the artist. "We wanted to have a show to coincide with Aldrich's "Draw On!", where we can celebrate drawing,"says Loft Artist and exhibit coordinator Margaret Tsirantonakis. "While visitors can view our exhibit, they can also engage in drawing activities that will make for a rewarding and fun experience. Drawing is so important to how I make art it helps me to really see what is before me and what is happening in my work. I am tremendously excited to have an opportunity to share this with visitors to our events." "Draw On!" is a community program first started by the Aldrich Museum in 2006. Throughout the week The Aldrich and various organizations around Connecticut celebrate drawing through a series of events and programs open to children, teens, and adults in their community. The goal of "Draw On!" is to bring people together through something as basic as drawing, while at the same time fostering new and imaginative ways to draw. The LAA is pleased to be participating this year in "Draw On!" with a series of exciting events for our citizens and neighbors. On Saturday, March 28 from 2-5 pm and Saturday, April 4, from 2-5 pm, visitors will be able to participate in an array of free drawing activities. Events will include: Draw a Mural with LAA artists; Draw to Music (combining music with drawing); Draw to a Story (draw as you listen to a story being read aloud). Another event is Model Drawing, offering the opportunity to sketch costumed Curtain Call actors as they stroll and pose. In Draw Cards -a fun drawing game for all ages- participants are given 2.5" x 3.5" inch card stock paper to make their own trading, tarot or art cards. All events are free of charge and open to the public--draw with friends and family or on your own! Experienced sketchers as well as first- timers are welcome -- the focus is on enjoying the experience of all kinds of drawing! The exhibit LAA Draws! can be viewed during regular gallery hours (Fri-Sun, 12-5pm) from Friday, March 13 through Sunday, April 26, 2009. There will be a reception to which the public is invited on Friday, March 13 from 6-9 pm.
