FAR AWAY PLACES AND SPACES

A Group Photography Show!
May 22 through June 28, 2009
Opening Reception: Friday, May 22 from 6pm to 9pm

Stamford, CT - LOFT ARTISTS FOCUS ON PHOTOGRAPHY: In a departure from the more heavily travelled road of canvas and stone, the Loft Artists focus their sights on the realm of camera and photographic image. Far Away Places & Spaces reflects places or realities different from our everyday environment. On view are ethereal landscapes, refracted light skies and murky depths. Artists include those who use photography as their main form of expression, as well as those for whom this is a departure from more familiar means of creation.

Exhibiting artists were encouraged to create abstracted or surreal images that would evoke emotion and transport the viewer deep into the imaginary world of the artist?s design. Some artists did just that, conjuring interpretive visions of dreams and unreal spaces. Others interpreted Far Away Places & Spaces in a more earthly manner, showing photography of places that are simply far away from their everyday environment here in Connecticut. Viewers are likely to take away from the show a sense of creativity that is romantically independent of the real.

In speaking about her vision for Far Away Places & Spaces, Lisa Cuscuna, photographer, painter, and driving force behind this unusual exhibit, offered a quote from abstract photographer Jerry Uelsmans: "The contemporary artist in all areas is no longer bound to the restrictions of traditional ideas. He is not bound to a fully conceived pre-visioned end. One of the major changes seen in modern art is the transition from what was basically an outer directed art form in the 19th century, to the inner directed art of today." Here is a show that offers glimpses into Far Away Places & Spaces, both inner and outer.
