Stamford CT - Loft Artists Association presents "Susan McCaslin: Recent Work Inspired by the Old Leather Man," an installation and painting show by Susan McCaslin. The exhibit runs from August 6 through September 12, 2010. An opening reception is planned for Sunday, August 8 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This is a free event open to the public.

On Sunday, September 12 at 2 pm, Dan W. DeLuca, author and leading expert on the Old Leather Man, will give a free lecture and will be available to sign his book, "The Old Leather Man, Historical Accounts of a Connecticut and New York Legend." Books will be available for sale in the gallery throughout the duration of the show. This is a free lecture open to the public.

McCaslin's exhibit is inspired by an eccentric wanderer who, around 1883 and for almost six years, walked a circuitous route every 34 days between Ossining NY and Old Saybrook CT. McCaslin says, "I learned of the Old Leather Man from a woman who remembers her grandmother cooking food for him as he passed by each month. She had a map of his journey and photos from a newspaper clipping as well as an odd looking "Leather Man" doll. I was hooked. I think most of us have someone in our lives who is odd, an eccentric, with whom we empathize and often try to see the world through his or her eyes."

Multiple styles and techniques that vary from nature paintings to photographic installations will be exhibited by McCaslin as she illustrates what she thinks the wanderer might have seen as he walked the countryside, and conversely, what others saw of him.

Included in the exhibit will be the ongoing project "1000 Postcards," an homage to anyone who travels and chooses to keep a record of their experiences, sending proof of their journey to family or friends. Visitors are welcome to handle the cards in the same way postcards are handled as they move from the sender, through the mail, and into the hands of the receiver.

About drawing the Old Leather Man Caves & Shelters, "I love drawing the caves and shelters. I draw the rocks, the trees, the leaves, whatever nature or man has so artfully placed to define these spaces. I draw the boulders leaning against each other for support, the rocks peppering the landscape, the trees that stand tall and define the horizon and the leaves and fallen twigs or branches that carpet the ground. And as I draw, I wonder about this man who was all alone in the midst of his neighbors."

"Recent Work Inspired by The Old Leather Man" will run from August 6 through September 12, with an opening reception that is free and open to the public on Sunday, August 8 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Loft Artists Gallery is located at 845 Canal Street in Stamford, CT. Gallery hours are Friday through Sunday, 12-5 pm. Admission is free. Private appointments are available through the artist, susan@susanmccaslin.com.
