I am a painter as a direct result of first having been a dancer with the New York City Ballet under the direction of George Balanchine. Here I was part of the highly charged atmosphere of dancers, choreographers, costume designers and musicians, all working in concert (usually) toward the common goal of creating art. I was first aware of things visual within this context. Costume and set designs by Chagall, Roualt and Naguchi awed and excited me. Their innovation and scale fascinated me. Frequent tours to Europe and Russia further expanded my appreciation of great art. A blank canvas for me is an empty stage. It suggests infinite space waiting to be filled.
