Renee Kahn: Selected Works

Renee Kahn: Selected Works
July 10 - August 30, 2009
CLOSING RECEPTION:
Thursday, August 27, 5-8pm
August 27 marks the closing of an exhibit of paintings by artist, Renee Kahn featuring selected works created over the past two decades. Kahn, who began her studies at the High School of Music & Art in New York City, is known for her creative and satirical approach to the local scene. "I call it my 'Seven Deadly Sins' series, only from a suburban perspective," Kahn declares, referring to the commonality of "sin" through all times and cultures. Having taught art history for over twenty years at the University of Connecticut Stamford Campus, she is especially drawn to the work of the German social satirists of the Weimar era, among them George Grosz and Max Beckmann. "I'm not as brutal as they were, but then, these are different times."
Over the past years, Kahn has exhibited her paintings and constructions at dozens of galleries and museums throughout the northeast, ranging from the Bruce Museum in Greenwich to a storefront gallery on Prince Street in SOHO. A large installation of cardboard boxes containing miniature scenes of urban Stamford before Urban Renewal is currently on permanent display at the Tully Center in Stamford. Kahn was one of the original group of artists who occupied the former Yale & Towne lock factory in the South End of Stamford and currently shows her work in the newly refurbished lofts at 845 Canal Street.
The exhibit, which opens on July 10th, pokes fun at the foibles of suburban life. The Seven Deadly Sins, a religious concept dating back to the Middle Ages, takes on a modern twist with large oil paintings or drawings on brown paper with intriguing titles such as: "Envy: Loehman's Dressing Room," or "Lust: Male Strippers Appear in Darien."
Kahn, director of the Historic Neighborhood Preservation Program is noted for her efforts in preserving historic structures in Stamford, She views her struggles to maintain a humane urban environment as a manifestation of the themes she deals with in her art.
Read about Renee in the July 7, 2009 issue of Fairfield Weekly Online.
The exhibit is co-curated and hung by Sandy Garnett and Lina Morielli.
